This Boy’s Talent
Hot on the heels of his widely acclaimed performance on Parenthood, DiCaprio landed a role in the 1992 classic movie This Boy’s Life. Out of 400 young actors competing for the role, DiCaprio was picked out personally by Hollywood legend Robert DeNiro.
DeNiro could see the true talent that the young DiCaprio possessed, and the two of them starred together in the movie alongside Ellen Barkin. Rumor has it that DiCaprio was a bit of a rowdy teenager during his time on set and that it was DeNiro who took him under his wing and reined in his behavior.
DiCaprio was making his mark in Hollywood and proving to the world that he was already a talented and accomplished young man. However, it was also his boyish good looks and his pretty babyface that were causing a stir in Hollywood.
That’s why his next role was so important to the young actor’s career. DiCaprio next starred in 1993’s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, where he gave a heartbreaking, showstopping performance of a young man with mental disabilities. It would be the first of many dramatic challenging roles for DiCaprio, for which he would become a Hollywood legend.
