Not An Anomaly
The reality of her situation shocked Estela, her doctors, and many locals in their corner of Chile. Specially because when she discovered she was carrying a fetus, she was at this time 91 years old. Can you imagine carrying a fetus for more than 60 years? How can you not be aware of that for so many years ? Not many people had ever heard of such a terrifying condition. And yet, as it turns out, Estela’s condition wasn’t as mysterious as many people might have thought. It is not common but this condition can happen.
Estela’s condition is called lithopedion, and it affects a small percentage of women across the world. The names of these fetuses themselves are lithopedions or stone babies. These unique specimens are the result of a fetus that begins to develop outside of a pregnant woman’s womb.
The lithopedion is a fetus resulting from an ectopic pregnancy that has not come to term, and who died without having been expelled, knowing that it was not diagnosed during this period. It follows a calcification and a tolerance which can exceed half a century.
