Watch out for the bed!
In the Wild West, If you were on the road and required a bed to survive the night, you would have been forced to spend the night in a dingy place or a parlour if you weren’t wealthy. The alcohol flowed freely, and everyone relished the opportunity to imbibe. They ended up sleeping in the same location where they became inebriated. It was drinking until you could not continue and then collapsing on your bed amidst the filth or on a rented bed.
It’s not bad to find a bed for the night, but you really shouldn’t be careful about the cleanliness. Indeed, the hygiene of these accommodations was subject to questioning. You might wonder who had slept in this bed before you and what illnesses you would be susceptible to catching. One can also wonder about the freshness of the linen. As discussed earlier, lice and fleas weren’t uncommon, that’s for sure. This is heinous, but it was normal at the time. This was also dangerous at the time because many robbers and bandits were looking for an easy target.
