Giant rift in Africa leads to the creation of a new ocean
November 24, 2021
You can already throw your terrestrial globes out the window, the geography is about to get exciting! We’re not talking about erosion or your college volcanic eruption class. We are talking about the fact that things are changing and we are witnessing the creation of a whole new ocean; an ocean that forms in the middle of Africa.
It all started in 2005 when a 60-kilometer-long crack opened in the middle of the Afar Desert in Ethiopia. This region is the scene of the formation of a new ocean. In fact, the phenomenon is well known and has already been studied in the 1970s. But what brought this story back to the front page was the formation of a long and deep fissure. These are seismic activities due to the eruption of the Dabbahu volcano that would have triggered the phenomenon that we observe.
